Sony SRS-XB33

The All-In-One Party Speaker

The Sony SRS-XB33 hits on all the ticket items for today’s portable Bluetooth speakers. It’s a LED light show, it’s a hands-free calling device, it’s a charger with its built-in power bank, and best and definitely not least, its a decent speaker with extra bass and long battery life. What more could you ask for?!

Released in July 2020, the XB33 has stood the test of time in regards to competition and new innovations. Today, in 2022, it still presents features that some portable speakers do not have.

However, do you need all the bells and whistles? Assuming all these features take away from the battery life, do you think you’ll end up using them all?

Although reasonably priced, is it fair to say the Sony SRS-XB33 is almost too much?

Overview & Specs

sony srs-xb33

The Sony SRS-XB33 really is a all-in-one speaker, and I’d be surprised if someone said this speaker didn’t have something they want.

As mentioned above, this device has all Sony’s latest innovations, from the “ExtraBass”, its “Live Sound” feature, and its X-Balanced speaker system. They haven’t skimmed on anything with the SRS-XB33, and for a price point of under $200, I am unsure why anyone would have issues with this speaker.

The Sony SRS-XB33 is IP67 waterproof, dustproof, rust-proof and even resistant to saltwater. Don’t worry about dropping it on your excursions, this speaker is shockproof of up to 1.2 meters. Although it doesn’t include a handle, they’ve ensured that no matter what happens with this speaker, it will stand the test of time and adventure.

Featuring a 24-hour battery life is the icing on the cake, but it also poses the question: with all these features, do you really get a full 24-hours? The answer is “No”, and if you were looking for a downfall with this speaker you’ve found it. There’s almost too many features to use, adjust and turn on/off that the battery life is greatly affected. So, are all these features really worth it?

The LED light show is where most your battery life will depreciate, but is controllable within the Fiestable app. Did I mention there were TWO apps to control this speaker with. Talk about too much? You can also use this app to add DJ style sounds and features to your speaker and music.

With the ExtraBass and LED lights on, Sony guarantees up to 14 hours of battery life.

The Sony Music Centre App controls the rest of what you would expect a basic music app to do. Things such as the ExtraBass feature, Live Sound, and EQ features are controlled with this app.

The Sony SRS-XB33 features Bluetooth 5.0, as well as NFC Bluetooth pairing for Android. It comes in 4 different colors: red, blue, black, and taupe (cream). This speaker also has a built-in power bank to charge your devices with and can be connected from the back USB-A port behind the rubber flap.

Because there are so many features with the SRS-XB33, Sony included a stamina button, that eliminates some bass response to save battery life.

Design

This speaker has a unique shape, and to call it cylindrical would be an exaggeration. It’s more of an oblong style, with a flat top and front, and a rounded back almost like a sitting support.

It measures 3.8 x 9.7 x 4.2 (HWD) and weighs 2.2 lbs. As mentioned above, it is IP67 rated, protected from 99% of all elements. It is also shockproof for up to a 1.2 meter fall. sony srs-xb33

Along the top of the device is a rubber plate featuring buttons such as power, volume, hands-free calling, Bluetooth pairing, Live Sound and NFC pairing spot. The buttons are hard to see in dim lighting, but have a texturized feel to them, so they are easy to navigate through touch.

The majority of the speaker is covered in a cloth mesh grille, with rubber feet along the bottom. It can be used sitting flat, or standing on one side. Both ends are covered by rubber caps, protecting the radiators on each side.

The LED lights are displayed on the borders of both rubber end caps, as well as around the front facing speakers. It illuminates almost light eyes in the night, and presents a very cool look. sony srs-xb33

Along the back you’ll find a rubber flap, protecting your USB-C charging port, USB-A power bank port, as well as options to pair several speakers together for true stereo sound. There are also battery life indicators included in those same spots.

Sound

I am pleasantly surprised with the sound you receive from this speaker. Having so many features and characteristics, I didn’t think Sony would deliver on the sound stage. However, they have managed to include great sound as well!

Not only is there decent sound from the Sony SRS-XB33, but there are several features to help narrow down the exact sound you might be looking for. A great place to start is the included app, which of course allows you to control EQ in your own fashion. But besides that, the ExtraBass feature can turn on and off, as well as the Live Sound feature. The ExtraBass feature speaks for itself, however the Live Sound feature works to create a three-dimensional experience by pushing sound out in a wider angle for a more consuming sound.

This speaker has two full range drivers at the front, and duel passive radiators on either side of the speaker. It pushes out a frequency range of 20HZ – 20kHz.

The front speakers are designed with Son’y signature “X-Balance” design. This oval speaker design maximizes the speaker diaphragm, which increases sound pressure for that punchy bass sound. It also reduces driver exertion, with less distortion at high volume levels.

The off center design of the speakers optimizes the weight distribution and enhances clarity, which in turn , widens the soundstage.

Although this speaker provides stereo sound, you can capture true stereo sound by pairing with another SRS-XB33.

At higher volumes, the SRS-XB33 maintains clarity, and very little distortion can be heard. I am impressed with this all-in-one speaker!

Cons and Other Considerations

What I LOVE!

There’s not much I do not love about this speaker. I think my biggest compliment is the care and attention that went into each feature on the SRS-XB33.

The lights come with their own app to manage. The speaker not only carries upwards of 24 hours of battery life, but also includes a built-in power bank. Not only does it feature ExtraBass but it also has a function to reduce that for better battery life, as well as is created with signature speakers for better sound performance.

You can tell a lot of thought was put into this device, and there’s a lot to appreciate.

What I Think Could Be Better…

I just feel like it’s too much. Although they make it easy, you’ll spend half your time managing your battery life, and deciding which feature to turn on/off or which to play with. Myself, I just want a quality performing speaker.

My Verdict: All-In-One = Too Much..

For $180, you are really getting your biggest bang for your buck. This speaker has virtually EVERYTHING you would ever require out of a speaker.

I just feel overwhelmed by the amount of features included with this speaker, and continue to be amazed that they can sell it for so cheap. If you are an all or nothing person, looking for quality sound and a lot of features to play with, then this is your speaker!

However, if you just need a basic speaker, with quality sound, and no bells and whistles, then check out some of my other reviews here!

There are plenty of speakers on the market to appease the many!
