Bang Olufsen Beosound A1 2nd Gen Speaker
Another review with a Bang and Olufsen product, but this time its one of their popular on their line-up, the Bang Olufsen Beosound A1 2nd Gen Speaker.
I have heard so much about this speaker, and have to give Bang and Olufsen kudos for their well-rounded product. An upgrade from the first generation Beosound A1, this large puck shaped device is rugged, sleek, and pumps out some of the best sound from such a little speaker.
Within my review I’ll touch on overview and important specs, as well as design, and most importantly sound. My goal is to highlight what’s great about this product, and what’s left to be desired.
Hopefully today I’ll help you understand if the Bang Olufsen Beosound A1 2nd Gen Speaker is the right portable Bluetooth speaker for you!
Overview & Specs
First and foremost, this speaker comes at a price! But that’s no surprise, as Bang and Olufsen is known for their premium built audio products. However, can they justify the price with overall quality and build?
This is my second review of a B&O product, and I know it won’t disappoint!
Sliding in at a cool $250, with an Amazon rating of 4.5/5 and 1,100 consumer ratings, it seems that this speaker may be able to justify its cost.
It comes in several colors, such as black, green, gray, pink, sport (turquoise/black), gold, and white.
B&O has added some important features to the second generation Beosound, such as longer battery life, and much better durability, making it a true outdoor friendly and portable product.
They also managed to squeeze in 3 mics along the foot of this speaker, making it voice controllable and specifically designed with Amazon Alexa support.
Compared with most speakers, this speaker is compact and features a mono channel instead of stereo. With a second Gen 2 Beosound you can connect the two to make them stereo. As this product lays flat, despite mono, you still receive a decent 360-degree sound profile.
As with all B&O speakers, the Beosound A1 Gen 2 connects to the Bang and Olufsen app, allowing for several listening modes, EQ presets and even the Beosonic options. Beosonic allows you to roll the dial over to relaxed and warm sound, or more towards the bright and energetic sounds.
The Bang Olufsen Beosound A1 2nd Gen Speaker features Bluetooth 5.1 and a fully adaptive Bluetooth codec, allowing for seamless play and virtually no glitches.
The design of the Bang Olufsen Beosound A1 2nd Gen Speaker is second to none and extremely unique. I wouldn’t expect anything less from B&O.
Featuring a hockey puck, or flying saucer build, it’s compact and fits easily into any space. It measures 5.1 x 1.8 inches and weighs just under a pound and a half. It’s a sturdy speaker, and is designed to either sit flat or hang with the leather strap included.
The flat base is made from a soft polymer, yet durable to the touch, and the convex grille is pearl blasted aluminum. The stylish strap is made from leather, and adds a very classy look to the speaker.
The control buttons are located at the base of the speaker, and unless you have huge hands, requires you to almost pick it up to use them.
The buttons include playback, volume up/down, power, Bluetooth and the microphone toggle. Press the play/pause button twice to skip forward, and three times to navigate backwards. Incoming calls can also be answered with this button.
There’s a small LED light that indicates when the battery is low. However, with it being so low on the base, you don’t see it unless you’re actively looking for it. You’ll also find the USB charging port here, without a weather proof flap to protect it.
The best added feature, and what I believe should be a part of ANY portable speaker is the IP67 rating. This speaker is virtually weather and dust proof. You can bring this speaker anywhere without the worry of damaging it.
The Bang Olufsen Beosound A1 2nd Gen Speaker has amazing battery life, and is advertised to last 18 hours. However, this varies with volume level, and at lower levels has been seen to last up to 48 hours!
Believe it or not, B&O managed to include a single 3.5 inch woofer, and a single 0.4 inch tweeter driven by two dedicated 30-watt class D amplifiers. It delivers mono audio with a frequency range of 55HZ – 20 KHZ.
I was overwhelming impressed with the bass that came out of this little device. They have done a great job delivering on a beautiful sound profile for this speaker.
As with most small speakers, you’ll notice the bass pulled back a bit as the volume gets louder. Although it still boasts an impressive base, this is done to avoid distortion of the highs and lows as the volume changes. I’d take a drawn back bass as opposed to distortion at high levels.
Regardless of where you have this speaker and how loud you have it at, you’ll be more than satisfied with the sound.
Both woofer and tweeter are upward facing, but because of the way this speaker sits, it does manage to push in a 360-degree manner. When hung by the strap you don’t get that same feeling.
Because this speaker is solid, and has some good weight to it, the impressive bass won’t rumble the speaker itself. It has plenty of power to fill a room, and I didn’t find the need to turn it up full volume to be satisfied.
Cons and Other Considerations
The biggest con to the Bang Olufsen Beosound A1 2nd Gen Speaker is the price. This is a luxury speaker, by a premium company, and the cost is expected. The really great part? This speaker delivers on the cost with performance, style and durability.
The second opportunity missed was the mono channel, and the inability to pair with the A1 first generation to make stereo.
You can pair with another 2nd generation to make stereo, but not the first gen. This is a miss for B&O and will probably frustrate those who already have the first and want to make a stereo pair.
When placed flat, the mono channel delivers enough 360-degree sound that you barely notice the lack of stereo sound profiles.
The buttons along the bottom are awkward, and hard to play with while the speaker sits. You can, although, use most of those features through the B&O app.
My Verdict: A quality speaker, with an expected cost
The Bang Olufsen Beosound A1 2nd Gen Speaker is an amazing speaker, that demands the cost it deserves.
It really does deliver on all aspects, and although there are a few points it may have missed, it delivers on a range of desired features.
You can feel confident purchasing this speaker and tossing it in your bag, purse, or backpack for an outdoor adventure. Or, you can place it in a room, on a table, or hung from a shelf and get a beautiful sound, and lasting battery life.
I hope I’ve helped narrow down your Bluetooth speaker search! Take a look at some of my other reviews!
