Altec Lansing Bluetooth Speaker – $20 Mini H2O Review

Altec Lansing Bluetooth Speaker

This Altec Lansing Bluetooth speaker, the Mini H2O is on its third generation and is the most inexpensive speaker on their “Everything Proof” line up.

For only $20 bucks, you can have a speaker that is waterproof, dustproof, snow proof and indestructible. It is also compact enough to fit into any purse, backpack or satchel you choose to rep that day. Sounds almost too good to be true, doesn’t it?

Although this small speaker seems to be “Everything Proof”, does it have the capabilities of a big bassy speaker worth $500?

Join me in my Mini H2O Altec Lansing Bluetooth Speaker review to find out!

Overview & Specs

Boasting 4.4/5 and 14k in reviews on Amazon, the Mini H2O is the optimal outdoor adventure speaker, and what’s even better is the price tag that comes with it. Regardless of how tight the pocket book might be, this speaker is within anyone’s budget.

It first came to market in 2016, and since then Altec Lansing has moved onto its third generation of the Mini H2O.

This speaker literally has it all. It is IP67 rated, meaning it can withstand the rain, snow, sand, dust, and any impact it may take while rolling around in your backpack, or even falling out of the car. It even floats, making it the perfect adventure companion.

Although extremely compact, it only carries 6 hours of battery life and takes 2 – 3 to charge fully when drained. This could make it slightly less portable. depending on how hard you like to adventure.

Obviously, it’s Bluetooth enabled (as all the devices on my reviews!) with up to 30ft in wireless connectivity. This makes it easy to venture away from the speaker without worry you may lose the tunes.

On the front speaker grille you’ll find the integrated microphone for hands-free calling, and smart assistant capabilities. Whether you prefer Siri, or Google you’ll be able to handle the device hands-free!

Design

This Altec Lansing Bluetooth speaker is extremely compact, and features an elongated octagon shape and weighs a mere 6 ounces.

It measures 2” x 2” x 10” making it very slim, and portable. It comes with an integrated carabineer metal loop on the top left hand corner, and in the box it includes the clip to go along with it.

The Mini H2O comes in 6 different colors:

  • Aqua;
  • Black;
  • Blue;
  • Mint;
  • Orange;
  • Red.

The outer edges of the device are rubberized, with the control buttons on the top panel, and plug-ins on the bottom protected by a rubberized flap. Within the flap is the AUX cable plug-in and USB charging port. The cables are both included within the box.

The speaker grille encompasses the entire front of the Mini H2O and inside the grille is the LED indicator light and microphone.

When charging, you’ll notice the LED indicator light shine either red or nothing. Red means it’s charging, and nothing means it’s fully charged.

Although you only have 3 buttons on the top of the speaker, each button features multiple functions. In order to pair with your Bluetooth device, you have to hold down the power button for 1 – 2 seconds. It will flash red/blue on the LED indicator. Once paired, it will shine Blue.

To answer a call, you will press once on the power button, press and hold the reject call, and press twice to activate your smart assistant.

When moving through tracks, you’ll use the volume keys. Press and hold the volume up button to skip to the next track, and press and hold the volume down button to go back to a track.

Simply pressing the power button once will turn the music from play to pause.

This may seem convenient, or absolute chaos, depending on the person you are. It can become easy to accept a call accidently instead of rejecting, or when turning the music up, you could accidently change the song.

Sound

I know this is the section everyone is waiting for, the sound.

A speaker this inexpensive, boasting as many features as it does, there’s no way it has a magnificent sound. And unfortunately, that’s exactly the case.

Featuring dual one inch drivers, front facing, this little speaker only has so much oomph in it. If you’re not facing it directly, you already get distorted sound, and unfortunately the louder you go, the worse it gets. It has a lot of distortion at high levels, and the bass is lacking for sure.

This little speaker will do the job, but it won’t blow your socks off.

If you think you have a bit more money to spend, check out this portable IP67 rated speaker!

Cons and Other Considerations

I love that this product is “Everything Proof” and you won’t have to worry regardless of where you take it.

What I think can be improved is sound, and battery life. If the next generation of the Altec Lansing Bluetooth speaker is bumped up into the $50 bracket, with investment into the speaker drivers, and a longer battery life, I think this speaker will dominate the speaker industry more than it already has.

Verdict: Everything Proof, without the sound…

If you’re just looking for a speaker that can go literally anywhere with you, that you’re not going to go broke on, this Altec Lansing Bluetooth Speaker is the right fit for you. The only downside is you’ll have to take a hit on the sound quality.

It’s just too small and company of a speaker to carry big sound. Some consumers will be okay with that, and having it in your shop, on the golf cart, or even on the surf board, it will suite exactly the need you’re looking for!

If you’re looking for a rugged, everything proof speaker that also boasts the sound quality, check out some of these speakers here!

    Thanks for our honest review on Altec Lansing Bluetooth Speaker.  Having some many features in a compact speaker is a plus for this product. I think It would be useful for someone like me who can handle loud sounds. It is also very affordable as the IP67 is much more expensive as it  is provides better sound. Is the IP67 durable?
